A gentle 0.01% hypochlorous acid eyelid cleanser for daily lid and lash hygiene, blepharitis, meibomian gland dysfunction and irritated eyelids.
TheraTears SteriLid Antimicrobial Eyelid Cleanser is a ready-to-use hypochlorous acid spray designed to gently reduce bacteria and debris from the eyelids and lashes without soap, scrubbing or rinsing.
It contains 0.01% hypochlorous acid (HOCl) — a naturally occurring antimicrobial molecule also produced by the body's immune system — and is formulated for the delicate skin around the eyes.
Regular eyelid cleansing can be particularly helpful for people with blepharitis, meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD), recurrent styes, dry eye disease or irritated eyelid margins.

What is hypochlorous acid?
Hypochlorous acid, often shortened to HOCl, is a molecule naturally produced by white blood cells as part of the body's immune response.
When used in an appropriately formulated eyelid cleanser, hypochlorous acid provides antimicrobial activity while remaining gentle on the delicate eyelid margin.
TheraTears SteriLid contains 0.01% hypochlorous acid and has been shown to rapidly reduce common microorganisms found around the eyelids and lashes.
What is TheraTears SteriLid used for?
SteriLid can be used as part of everyday eyelid hygiene and may be particularly useful for:
- Blepharitis
- Meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD)
- Dry or irritated eyelids
- Recurrent styes or chalazia
- Crusting or debris around the eyelashes
- People who have been advised to maintain regular lid hygiene
- Contact lens wearers who need good eyelid and lash cleanliness
- Before or after eye procedures when recommended by an eye-care professional
Can hypochlorous acid help with blepharitis?
Blepharitis often involves inflammation of the eyelid margin alongside an increased bacterial load and accumulation of oils or debris around the eyelashes.
A hypochlorous acid eyelid cleanser can help reduce microorganisms and improve eyelid hygiene, making it a useful part of blepharitis management.
It does not replace treatment for the underlying cause of blepharitis, however. Depending on your eye findings, management may also include warm compresses, meibomian gland treatment, anti-inflammatory therapy or treatment for Demodex.
Is SteriLid useful for meibomian gland dysfunction?
Yes. Good eyelid hygiene is commonly recommended as part of managing meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD).
SteriLid helps keep the lid margin and lashes clean, but it does not directly unblock the meibomian glands. If your glands are blocked, we will often recommend combining lid cleansing with a 10-minute warm compress and other treatments depending on the severity of your MGD.
How to use TheraTears SteriLid
- Wash your hands and remove contact lenses and eye makeup.
- Spray SteriLid onto a clean cotton pad.
- Close the eye and gently wipe along the upper eyelid and lash line.
- Gently clean the lower lash line.
- Use a fresh pad for the other eye.
- Do not rinse.
It can generally be used once or twice daily, or as recommended by your optometrist.
Do I need to rinse SteriLid off?
No. TheraTears SteriLid is designed as a no-rinse eyelid cleanser.
Once you have cleaned the eyelids and lashes, simply allow the area to dry naturally.
Can I use SteriLid if I have dry eyes?
Yes. Eyelid inflammation, blepharitis and meibomian gland dysfunction frequently occur alongside dry eye disease.
Maintaining clean eyelids can therefore be an important part of a broader dry eye treatment plan.
If your dry eye symptoms persist despite regular home treatment, an eye examination can help determine whether MGD, inflammation, allergy, Demodex or another ocular-surface condition is contributing.
