Health NZ Contact Lens Subsidy
Some patients require contact lenses for medical reasons, rather than simply for convenience or lifestyle. In these cases, the New Zealand Ministry of Health (Health NZ Te Whatu Ora) Contact Lens Subsidy may help contribute towards the cost of contact lenses and associated clinical care.
The subsidy is designed for people whose vision cannot be adequately corrected with glasses. This most commonly includes patients with:
- Very high prescriptions
- Keratoconus and other corneal conditions
- Irregular corneas following surgery or injury
- Significant anisometropia (large difference between the two eyes)
For eligible patients, the subsidy can contribute towards the cost of specialist contact lens fittings, clinical appointments, and lenses required for medical vision correction.
At Illume Eye Care, our optometrists regularly manage complex contact lens cases, including keratoconus, irregular corneas, and high prescriptions, and can assess whether you may qualify for this subsidy.
If you think you may be eligible, or have been advised to wear specialist contact lenses, please contact our team. We can guide you through the eligibility requirements and application process.
