Advanced Treatments for Dry Eye, Blepharitis and Meibomian Gland Dysfunction

Personalised care for lasting comfort and clearer vision

At Illume Eye Care, we understand that dry eye disease can affect your comfort, clarity, and confidence every day. That’s why we go beyond symptom relief to target the root cause of your dryness.

As well as making tailored recommendations on lifestyle changes, nutrition, and home management, we offer a range of advanced in-practice treatments that restore healthy tear function and reduce inflammation.

If you’ve been diagnosed with Dry Eye Disease, Blepharitis, or Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD)—these are often chronic conditions, but that doesn’t mean you have to live with discomfort. While home therapies such as warm compresses, lid hygiene, lubricating drops, and omega-3 supplements are essential foundations of care, our medical-grade dry eye treatments can help restore gland function, improve tear quality, and provide longer-lasting relief.

Because everyone’s eyes are unique, we create a personalised treatment plan that may combine several therapies to achieve the best results.

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Therapy

What it Treats - MGD, ocular rosacea, inflammatory lid disease, Demodex blepharitis, and chalazion.

IPL therapy uses precise pulses of light to reduce inflammation around the eyelids and stimulate healthy gland function. By targeting the tiny blood vessels and bacteria that contribute to inflammation, IPL can improve the health of the eyelid margin and surrounding skin.

Over time, this therapy can enhance meibomian gland output, improve tear film stability, and reduce redness and discomfort. IPL is particularly effective for patients with rosacea, telangiectasia, or treatment-resistant blepharitis.

TearScience® LipiFlow® Thermal Pulsation

What it Treats - Obstructive Meibomian Gland Dysfunction and evaporative dry eye

LipiFlow® is often considered the gold standard for treating blocked oil glands. This comfortable, 12-minute in-office procedure applies controlled heat to the inner eyelids while gently massaging the glands to clear obstructions and restore natural oil flow.

Benefits may include:

  • Improved tear stability and reduced evaporation
  • Better gland function and oil secretion
  • Relief from dryness, burning, and grittiness for up to 12 months or longer
  • Reduced dependence on lubricating drops and warm compresses

Most patients describe the treatment as warm and relaxing, with no downtime required.

Low-Level Light Therapy (LLLT)

What it Treats - MGD, chalazion, demodex, blepharitis and inflammatory skin conditions around the eyes

LLLT uses gentle red, blue, yellow and near-infrared light to stimulate cellular repair, reduce inflammation, and support healthy meibomian gland function. It’s painless, non-invasive, and well-suited for patients with sensitive skin or rosacea who may not tolerate IPL. The combination of light used is tailored to your specific needs.

LLLT can be used on its own or as a maintenance treatment following IPL or LipiFlow to help preserve results.

ZEST – Zocular Eyelid System Treatment

What it Treats - Anterior blepharitis, Demodex infestation, inflamed eyelids, and chronic lid debris

ZEST is an in-clinic deep-cleansing treatment that uses a natural okra-based gel to exfoliate the eyelid margin and lash base. It removes hardened oils, debris, and bacterial biofilm while being gentle on the delicate eyelid skin.

It’s especially beneficial for patients with persistent blepharitis, lash irritation, or those preparing for other dry eye procedures like IPL or LipiFlow.

Therapeutic Meibomian Gland Expression

What it Treats - MGD and chronic lid congestion

Manual gland expression allows us to physically remove blockages and evaluate the quality of your meibum—the essential oil that keeps your tears stable. It can be performed on its own or combined with heat-based therapies to maximise results.

Lid Margin Blepharoexfoliation

What it Treats - Chronic blepharitis, blocked capped meibomian glands, lid margin inflammation, and bacterial biofilm

This precision exfoliation treatment uses a dedicated medical device to remove crusting, hardened oils, and bacterial build-up that can block glands and irritate the eyes. Regular blepharoexfoliation helps maintain eyelid health and supports long-term dry eye control, especially for those with moderate to severe blepharitis.

NuLids® Eyelid Hygiene Device

What it Treats - Chronic blepharitis, blocked capped meibomian glands, lid margin inflammation, and bacterial biofilm

NuLids® is an innovative doctor-designed treatment system that gently stimulates and cleans the eyelid margins using a soft oscillating tip. It helps remove biofilm and debris while stimulating meibomian gland activity we often use this during our ZEST cleanses.

Home devices are also available for daily eyelid health between professional treatments. Used for just one minute a day, NuLids can:

  • Improve tear quality and comfort
  • Support the results of in-clinic treatments like LipiFlow or ZEST
  • Reduce the need for frequent warm compresses
  • Help maintain clear, healthy eyelids long term

Blephasteam® – Moist Heat Therapy with Gland Expression

What it Treats - MGD, eyelid congestion, and evaporative dry eye

Blephasteam® provides gentle, consistent moist heat to the eyelids, softening thickened oils inside the meibomian glands. Following the warming phase, your optometrist performs a therapeutic meibomian gland massage to express stagnant oils and restore natural flow.

This combination of controlled heat and manual expression helps your glands produce a healthier, more stable tear film and can relieve dryness, grittiness, and tired eyes.

For many patients, Blephasteam provides effective maintenance every six to twelve months. If symptoms persist or return quickly, we may recommend further in-clinic therapies that treat the underlying gland dysfunction more deeply—such as Intense Pulsed Light (IPL), Low-Level Light Therapy (LLLT), or the gold standard LipiFlow® Thermal Pulsation treatment.
