HYLO DUAL® is a preservative-free lubricating eye drop designed for people experiencing dry, burning, irritated or itchy eyes, particularly when dryness occurs alongside inflammation or allergy-related symptoms.

Unlike a simple lubricant, HYLO DUAL combines two complementary ingredients:

0.05% sodium hyaluronate (hyaluronic acid) to lubricate and hydrate the ocular surface, and 2% ectoine, an osmoprotective molecule that helps stabilise biological membranes and protect the ocular surface against environmental and osmotic stress.

Together, they help stabilise the tear film, reduce excessive tear evaporation and support a more comfortable ocular surface.

What is sodium hyaluronate?

Sodium hyaluronate is a form of hyaluronic acid (HA) widely used in lubricating eye drops because of its excellent water-binding and lubricating properties.

It helps retain moisture on the ocular surface, improving lubrication and reducing friction between the eyelids and the eye.

Clinical research continues to support hyaluronic acid-based artificial tears as an effective option for improving the signs and symptoms of dry eye disease.

What is ectoine and why is it in HYLO DUAL?

Ectoine is a naturally occurring molecule known as an osmoprotectant or extremolyte.

It has strong water-binding and membrane-stabilising properties and helps protect cells against stresses including dryness and high osmolarity.

This makes ectoine particularly interesting in ocular surface care, where tear-film instability, hyperosmolarity and inflammation can contribute to the dry-eye cycle.

Clinical studies of ectoine-containing ocular products have reported improvements in symptoms of ocular irritation and allergy, as well as tear-film stability.

Hyaluronic acid + ectoine

Sodium hyaluronate provides hydration and lubrication, while ectoine provides additional osmoprotective and membrane-stabilising properties.

Research has also investigated sodium hyaluronate and ectoine together, with clinical evidence supporting the combination in dry-eye management.

How long should I try dry eye drops before deciding whether they work?

One of the most common mistakes with lubricating eye drops is using them inconsistently or stopping after only a few days.

Dry eye drops can provide immediate lubrication, but determining their full benefit may require regular, consistent use over time.

In a six-month randomised controlled trial of artificial tears, participants used their drops at least four times per day. Sustained improvements in dry-eye symptoms were evident from around one month, while some measurable improvements in tear-film and ocular-surface health developed later.

The appropriate frequency will depend on the product and your individual eyes, so follow the instructions for use or the regimen recommended by your optometrist.

Is HYLO DUAL the best eye drop for dry eye?

There isn't one "best" dry eye drop for everyone.

Dry eye disease is multifactorial. Tear-film instability, meibomian gland dysfunction, inflammation, allergy, blepharitis, medications, environment and other health conditions can all contribute.

Choosing the right lubricant should therefore depend on what is causing your symptoms, rather than simply trying one bottle after another.
